The Multicultural Community Farm (formerly the Bhutanese Community Farm) is located on 2 hectares of land on the banks of the Murray River at Gateway Island, Wodonga. It was established in 2015 by the Bhutanese Association at Albury with support from many partners, including Parklands Albury Wodonga, National Environment Centre (Riverina TAFE) and E-Works Employment Solutions.
The Farm was established as a place for the refugee community and other culturally and linguistically diverse residents of Albury-Wodonga to build social connections and share culture and is focused on promoting good mental health and wellbeing through the process of organic farming.
From humble beginnings as a community development project with newly arrived Bhutanese refugee families, the farm has grown and transformed into 240 organic garden plots shared by members of seven nationalities (Bhutanese, Congolese, Kenyan, Nepalese, Fijian, Filipino and Bahai).
The farm provides a safe place for people to learn about their new country, exchange skills and knowledge, improve language and employment skills, socialise, and share their culture, all the while producing organic vegetables not usually commercially available.
With the farm at capacity and a long waiting list for garden plots, the Multicultural Farm Management Committee is seeking to expand the farm by utilising a further 2 hectares of the adjoining paddocks. The Committee is currently negotiating the expansion with landowner Wodonga Council and look forward to the new opportunities this will bring to the CALD communities and the broader community of Albury-Wodonga.
