Our Native Garden Nursery, a social enterprise part of Wodonga Urban Landcare Network (WULN), has been successful in securing funding from the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (FNPW) as part of their national Landscape Resilience Program- Community Based Nurseries Stream.
The funding will enable the nursery to continue its essential work growing quality native plants from locally sourced seed — a critical resource for ecological restoration across North East Victoria and the Southern Riverina and beyond. It will also support the dedicated volunteers who propagate, nurture and prepare plants for revegetation projects throughout the year.
Why local seed matters
Successful landscape restoration depends on more than simply planting trees. Plants grown from locally sourced, or ‘local provenance’, seed are adapted to the specific soils, rainfall patterns and ecosystems of a region. This means better survival rates, healthier biodiversity, and stronger long-term outcomes for wildlife and communities.
Australia is currently facing a growing shortage of native seed, particularly for region-specific and hard-to-grow species that are vital for bushland recovery. Community nurseries like Our Native Garden Nursery play a crucial role in addressing this challenge by growing species that commercial suppliers often cannot or will not prioritise.
About the Landscape Resilience Program
FNPW’s Landscape Resilience Program is a national initiative focused on restoring ecosystems in climate-impacted and degraded landscapes. The program works with community nurseries, seed collection programs, and restoration partners to strengthen the supply of local native plants needed for ecological recovery across Australia.
FNPW has been protecting Australia’s habitats and wildlife for over 50 years, investing more than $60 million in conservation projects in partnership with government, scientists, Indigenous groups, and community organisations across all states and territories.
A community effort
Our Native Garden Nursery is powered by the commitment of our regions volunteer community, who give their time to grow and propagate plants that end up in restored bushland, revegetated waterways, and wildlife corridors across the region. This funding directly supports the supply and dispatch of native plant seedlings for restoration projects, which is turn supports the volunteers and the infrastructure that makes their work possible.
WULN coordinates more than 500 volunteers across 18 member groups in North East Victoria, with programs including, waterways management and restoration, sustainable agriculture , habitat gardening and citizen science.
