Last Saturday in Thurgoona brought around 70 visitors to a beautiful wildlife-friendly garden, as Gardens 4 Wildlife Albury-Wodonga hosted its latest Open Garden event.
The property, owned by Alan and Lyn, offered visitors a wonderful example of what’s possible when a garden is designed with local wildlife in mind. Guests explored the grounds with enthusiasm, and many left with fresh ideas and renewed motivation to make changes in their own backyards.
The undisputed highlight of the day was a family of squirrel gliders sleeping soundly in their nesting boxes — with a fresh trail of mistletoe leaves on the ground below offering a charming clue that they had been active the night before. It was a special reminder that the small choices we make in our gardens can provide genuine refuge for our local wildlife.
Winter-flowering correas and other natives were putting on a beautiful display, and despite the number of visitors, birdsong could still be heard drifting through the garden. Alan also shared a photo book capturing years of wildlife sightings on the property — a testament to what a thriving habitat this garden has become over time.
Gardens 4 Wildlife Project Officer Jess Robinson said the turnout reflected just how much community appetite there is for this kind of practical inspiration. “It’s wonderful to see so many people keen to make a difference for wildlife in their own patch. Alan and Lyn’s garden shows what’s possible, and I think visitors left feeling like it really is achievable.”
