In the Friends of Federation Hill patch at the moment you can see why 1st September is Wattle Day! There are 4 Acacia species that are putting on an absolute show near the dam right now.
Clockwise from bottom left in the image is the Oven’s wattle (Acacia pravissima); Varnish wattle (Acacia verniciflua); Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) and Lightwood (Acacia implexa).
We have more wattle species planted but they don’t all flower at the same time. Hedge Wattle (Acacia paradoxa) has flowers not yet open. And there are other species on the hill, but these are some of the most common. And these are also good options for your own garden. Have a chat to the folks at Our Native Garden Nursery if you want ideas on wattles for your patch.
And if yellow is not your favourite colour there are plenty of other flowers starting to pop up around the dam.
Below you can see the Happy Wanderer (Hardenbergia violacea), Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata), Hopbush (Dodonea viscosa) and Woolly Grevillea (Grevillea lanigera) all putting on their own show.
